Woodbine, IA Youth Services Librarian (Part-time)

The Woodbine Carnegie Public Library is seeking a creative, energetic, and enthusiastic individual to serve as the Youth Services Librarian.  This Part-Time position will lead in person programs for children of all ages (toddler to teens), develop, select, organize, evaluate, and maintain the youth collections: as well assist with community-wide programs and outreach.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Previous experience working with young children is preferred and library experience a plus. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, email, smart phones, and social media a must. Knowledge of children’s literature. Understanding of technology and the internet. Ability to establish priorities, develop long range plans for the implementation of new services, programs or solutions to problems. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Position Objectives:

Proactively plans, organizes and delivers services in the Children’s Library. Preforms duties related to library operations, outreach programs and special activities. Continually seeks and finds ways to promote increased use of the Children’s Library. Works with school and community groups to develop and expand Children’s Services. Supervise the entire library, including personnel and facilities, in the absence of the Library Director.

Hours of work:

31 hrs/week, some evenings and weekends

Salary:  $13.00

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Job Title: Youth Services Librarian

General Description:  Plans, promotes, and implements programs and services for children and teens, as well as the daily operations related to the youth library, under the supervision of the Library Director.

Typical Duties:

  • Plans and conducts early literacy story hour on a weekly basis.
  • Plans and conducts programming and activities for annual summer reading program.
  • Plans and conducts children’s/teen/family programs throughout the year.
  • Creates special displays and bulletin boards that encourages reading.
  • Responsible for the general organization, maintenance, and appearance of the Children’s area and verifies that all equipment is working properly during work time.
  • Assists in the selection of special performers in conjunction with summer reading and guests

for other programs and events.

  • Assists library patrons in finding materials they want, answering reference questions,

providing reader’s advisory, computer assistances, making copies, faxing, laminating, etc.

  • Plans for and orders craft supplies and any other items needed for children’s programming.
  • Composes and prepares public relations materials such as news releases, flyers, brochures, social media platforms, etc., clearing them with the library director before they are printed or put to the public. Assist with the management of the social media & online presence of the Woodbine Carnegie Public Library.
  • Maintains up-to-date children’s and teen’s collections.
  • Explains and assists patrons in the use of OPAC.
  • Answers inquiries on the telephone and in person.
  • Reads and responds to correspondence and email pertaining to youth services.
  • Compiles statistics on attendance of all youth programs throughout the year for the Director’s Report and Summer Library Program.
  • Works Circulation Desk as needed: check out, check in, issue cards, etc. and related duties as

required.

  • Deals tactfully and courteously with the public.  Upholds all confidentially rights of patrons

and patron records.

  • Upholds established library policies and procedures.
  • Works closely with the library director in planning programs and maintains an effective

working relationship with fellow staff members.  Has a cooperative team spirit.

  • Builds and maintains active community partnership.
  • Uses library provided means for continuing education and training.  Attends training,

workshops, conferences, and other continuing education related to youth services as

approved by the director.

  • Some evenings and Saturdays are required.

Knowledge and abilities:

  • Knowledge on how to conduct story hour, crafts, and activities appropriate for age, using

stories, songs, action rhymes, etc.

 

  • Ability to organize, plan and conduct programs for the entire year, well in advance of carrying

them out.

  • Knowledge of children’s literature.
  • Experience with Windows operating systems and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, email, smart phones, and social media a must.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • State Library Certification of Youth Services Endorsement (currently held or acquired within two years of Employment).
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Interacts well with children.
  • Demonstrates organizational skills.
  • Able to plan and execute programming within reasonable times.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in library services.
  • Experience working with Children.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent need to see, walk, sit, stand, talk, and hear.
  • Intermittent physical activities including bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, and prolong periods of sitting.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Dexterity to perform data entry on a computer, laptop, iPad, or other electronic device.
  • Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, push full carts.  Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 lbs. and lifting 30 lbs. maximum.
