State Library Discontinuing Email Service for Public Libraries Starting May 1, 2025

Aug 19, 2024

State Librarian Michael Scott announced in an email to public library directors that as of May 1, 2025, the State Library will no longer offer email service for public libraries.

AtMail, the State Library’s vendor for email service, is currently used by 299 public libraries. Libraries that currently use the service will need to start planning and making arrangements to transition to a new service before May 1.

The State Library began offering email service to public libraries in the early days of the internet when it was tied to the first generation of PLOW library websites. At the time, few libraries had email service or the staff expertise to set it up. Now, email is ubiquitous, and can be likened to phone or internet service, which the State Library does not subsidize for libraries.

The State Library wants to support libraries through this change. A webpage has been prepared with resources to help library directors work through the process and address any questions they may have. These resources include:

  • Options for new email service, including starting cost(s) and if they support email archive transfer and custom domains
  • Additional information on each option and sign up links
  • FAQs
  • Action steps to ensure a smooth transition
  • Instructions on transferring AtMail email archive and contacts via Thunderbird

District LRTs are also available to help answer questions and provide support through the transition.
