Iowa public libraries are encouraged to participate in the Public Library Annual Survey, due each year on October 31. This survey collects essential data on library services, funding, staffing, and operations, which is used at local, state, and federal levels to assess library performance and inform decision-making. The State Library is authorized to administer the survey by Iowa Code 8A.202(1)(h). Completing the survey is a requirement for libraries to be eligible to receive Direct State Aid funding from the Enrich Iowa program.

The collected statistics help libraries analyze trends, compare to peer institutions, support budget requests, and plan for the future. Conducted in alignment with national standards set by the Public Library Statistics Cooperative (PLSC), the survey ensures consistency in public library data across all 50 states.
