Guidelines for CE

For an activity to count for CE credit, it must:

  • Be planned, coordinated, and officially run
  • Be checked to make sure it meets clear learning goals
  • Be designed for one of these purposes:
    • Helping librarians stay updated on new ideas and changes in the field
    • Refreshing basic library skills
    • Improving job skills
    • Leading to specialization in a new area of librarianship

General guidelines for CE credit (see below for information on taking an academic course for credit):

  • 30 minutes of instruction = 0.5 contact hour
  • 50 minutes of instruction = 1 contact hour
  • 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) = 10 contact hours
  • Roundtable/networking sessions = half-time credit (i.e. 1 hour of credit for a 2-hour roundtable)

Not interested in tracking CE Credit? Browse our YouTube channel for courses that interest you. We try to cross-post all courses to YouTube, but sometimes (contractual reasons, for example) we are not able to do this.

External CE Opportunities

There are many opportunities to earn CE hours outside of the State Library's offerings. The list below is a good place to start. Many providers offer courses for free, others will charge.

The State Library of Maine also provides a list of free CE happening around the country each month.

You may track hours earned from outside providers by completing the Request for External CE Hours form.

Request for External CE Credit

Use this form to request credit for training provided by agencies other than the State Library of Iowa. We'll review your submission and add the hours to your Workday Learning account.
