Part-Time Library Director Job Description
General Statement of Duties:
Subject to the policies of the Board of Trustees, has administrative charge of the library and is directly responsible for all activities and programs of the Library. This is a part-time (12 hours per week minimum) hourly position. This position includes weekend and evening duty and may be required to cover vacation and absences of other library staff. The Library Director reports to the Board of Trustees through the President of the Board.
Minimum Qualifications:
Certified as a Public Librarian by the State Library of Iowa or must attain certification within one year of employment. Demonstrate proficiency in researching and applying for grants or complete training within one year of employment. Must have appropriate computer skills including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet, email, Internet and Web Page applications along with the ability to file reports and surveys online.
Minimum age of 18 years with a high school diploma or equivalent, ability to work with patrons of varied backgrounds; knowledge of library materials, including children’s materials; ability to supervise others and to work with all members of library staff. Must be self-motivated and able to exercise initiative and independent judgement; ability to speak and write effectively.
Job Responsibilities and Examples of Services Performed:
1. Carries out the policies and directives of the Board of Trustees in a timely manner. Attends the meetings of the Board of Trustees.
2. Prepares monthly and annual reports.
3. Administration and management of library budget. Prepare annual budget for the library.
4. Research and apply for grants to generate income to supplement the library budget.
5. Updates the library’s Web Page monthly.
6. Attends professional meetings and workshops.
7. Responsible for book and periodical selection and purchase.
8. Maintains all statistics for reporting to the State of Iowa.
9. Catalogs all materials according to the Dewey Decimal system.
10. Maintains the appearance of the Library.
11. Handles all news articles, social media accounts, flyers, etc., for promoting the library and its programs.
12. Supervises all library personnel. Duties include hiring, discharging (with approval of the Board), and training all personnel. Conducts annual evaluation of all employees.
13. Knows and can perform the duties assigned to the Assistant Librarian and Library Clerk to cover for staff time off and train any new employees.
14. Maintains an active public relations program.
15. Purchases memorial materials as requested, notifies the family, and prepares an article for the paper.
16. Assesses community needs and is responsible for long-range planning.
17. Develops technology plan when necessary.
18. Works towards library accreditation with the State of Iowa.
19. Knows federal, state, and local laws affecting the library.
20. Supports intellectual freedom.
21. Cooperates as a team member with all library staff in performing any professional or nonprofessional duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations.
