About the Role
As a Circulation & Programming Assistant, you will play a key role in delivering exceptional service at our Children’s circulation desk, supporting community outreach and events, and maintaining the physical health of our collections. This position works closely with library staff, patrons, and volunteers in a dynamic, community-focused environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patron Services & Circulation
Greet visitors and provide friendly, helpful service in person, over the phone, and via email.
Process check-ins, check-outs, new library cards, and patron account updates.
Assist patrons with catalog searches, basic technology troubleshooting, printing, and digital resources.
Offer readers' advisory and help patrons locate materials suited to their needs.
Inform patrons of library policies, resolve minor concerns, and maintain confidentiality.
Programming & Outreach Support
Assist the Program and Outreach Librarian in planning, scheduling, and running recurring and special events for youth, families, and adults.
Set up and break down event spaces (arrange seating, prepare craft materials, test audiovisual equipment).
Draft promotional flyers, social media content, and newsletter announcements for upcoming events.
Collect attendance numbers and feedback to evaluate event success.
Collection Maintenance & Care
Perform minor repairs on damaged books and non-print materials (e.g., mending torn pages, repairing bindings and covers, replacing book jackets).
Shelve books and materials according to the Dewey Decimal System; maintain general library appearance.
Assist with collection selection and monitoring supplies under the direction of leadership.
Teamwork & Operations
Delegate tasks and provide day-to-day guidance to Library Assistants, Pages, and volunteers.
Participate in library marketing and technology updates.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience: Background in customer service required; prior library experience recommended.
Technical Skills: Familiarity with Microsoft Windows, library automation systems, basic office equipment, and digital resources.
Core Competencies: Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational abilities, conflict resolution, and basic record-keeping/cash handling.
Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the library, and reach, lift, or carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
