Position Summary
The Library Director is responsible for the administration, leadership, and overall operation of the Sheldon Public Library. This includes strategic planning, staff supervision, budget management, community engagement, and maintaining compliance with Iowa Library Association standards. The Director reports to the Library Board of Directors and upholds the mission of the library as a center for learning, literacy, and community connection.
Minimum Qualifications
The Director must meet the Iowa Library Association's Bronze Level and Silver Level certification standards:
Bronze Level
• High school diploma and
• 60 college credit hours or
• 10 years of library work experience
45 continuing education contact hours in the following areas are also required:
• Public Library Administration
• Selection of Library Materials
• Organization of Library Materials
• Reference and Information Services
Silver Level
• Degree from an accredited college or university
• 45 continuing education contact hours in each of the above-listed areas
Additional Requirements
• Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly and effectively
• Ability to communicate professionally in verbal and written formats
Primary Responsibilities
• Direct and coordinate all library operations and staff activities
• Supervise, support, and evaluate library employees; participate in hiring and training
• Prepare and administer the annual budget; review financials and manage expenditures
• Serve as the primary liaison to the Library Board; prepare monthly meeting materials
• Select, order, and maintain the library’s collection across all media formats
• Promote library services through marketing efforts and community partnerships
• Ensure compliance with state reporting (including the State Library Annual Form)
• Design and implement innovative library programs and services based on community needs
• Oversee building maintenance and coordinate with city staff on facility issues
• Represent the library in community groups and at professional library events
• Maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and service-oriented environment for patrons
• Other duties as assigned by library board.
Routine Task Summary
Daily Tasks
• Oversee check-in/check-out and circulation activity
• Answer reference and reader advisory questions
• Meet with staff as needed; supervise task assignments
• Respond to library emails and phone inquiries
• Promote a welcoming atmosphere and patron engagement
Weekly Tasks
• Prepare and deliver financial deposits
• Maintain awareness of book/media trends
• Serve as proctor for online exams
• Promote library events through local media and social platforms
Monthly Tasks
• Compile financial and usage reports for board meetings
• Order new materials and update displays
• Prepare staff schedules and review program proposals
• Monitor continuing education offerings
Quarterly Tasks
• Inventory and weed library collections
• Coordinate with city departments for building inspections or updates
• Review HVAC, lighting, and safety conditions
Annual Tasks
• Conduct employee performance evaluations
• Complete State Library annual report
• Prepare budget with board and city input
• Inventory library contents for city insurance
• Attend the Iowa Library Conference

Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 30 pounds (books, supplies, packages)
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching
• Ability to use a computer and telephone for extended periods
• Occasional setup or rearrangement of displays or small furniture
Environmental Requirements
• Work is performed primarily in a public library setting
• Moderate noise levels from patrons, programs, and office equipment
• Occasional outdoor work or errands may be required in varying weather
• Regular contact with members of the public and community partners
