Job Description—Library Director

Position Title: Library Director

Reports To: Library Board of Trustees

Supervises: Part-time employees and volunteers

Primary Duties:

Board Relations:

Makes recommendations to the Board on library policies and keeping policies updated
Works cooperatively with the Library Board of Trustees; prepares various reports for monthly board meetings (agenda, director’s report, financial report, etc) sends agenda to trustees prior to meetings in time to make additions or changes, posts the agenda publicly at least 24 hours before scheduled meetings 
Updates board regarding existing statewide programs
Shares opportunities to participate in new statewide programs
Shares opportunities for ongoing board education
Keeps board informed of changes to laws (local-state-federal levels) that impact library services
Prepares annual statistical report for Board, City, County and State
Shares financial reports prepared by city clerk with the Board
Tracks petty cash and records memorials
Attends city council meetings 

Collection Management:

Orders books and other library materials
Processes new library materials
Maintains the appearance of the collection and ensures systematic weeding of
materials
Processes Interlibrary Loan requests
Repairs library materials when appropriate
Keeps the automation system up to date
Shelves materials

Facilities Management:

Maintains a neat and attractive library, which may include posters, bulletin boards, displays, furnishings, etc.
Maintains the cleanliness of the library (dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, cleaning restroom accessed by the library, etc)

Technology Management:

Assists patrons with using library computers
Assists patrons with accessing the library’s wireless network
Promotes and assists patrons with using the library’s online resources
(BRIDGES eBooks, GALE reference sources, etc.)
Updates library website and Facebook page
Oversees computer maintenance

Library Services Management:

Ensures friendly customer service interactions
Plans and implements all library programs
Ensures participation in statewide library programs (as prescribed by State Library of Iowa) submits required reports re: statewide library programs
Registers patrons for library cards
Keeps circulation records; handles overdue notices
Writes library news articles for local paper and website
Actively participates in fund-raising events of the library
Attending continuing education classes

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: High school diploma and current public library certification
(or completion of Public Library Management Courses—PLM1 and PLM2—within two years of
hire) The Library Director is required to maintain library certification (as prescribed by State
Library of Iowa) through on-going continuing education. Additional education and/or previous
library work experience preferred. Knowledge of library automation system a plus. Skillful with
a variety of computer software applications, website design, and social media communication.
Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Approachability, friendliness,
self-motivation, dependability, and responsibility necessary.
Physical Environment/Physical Requirements of the Job: Job requires standing, bending,
reaching, stooping, kneeling and lifting up to 20 pounds. Maintain a valid Iowa driver’s license
with the expectation of driving independently to area workshops / training classes, to Ida County
meetings, etc.
Schedule: This part-time position averages 13 to15 hours per week. Library business hours are determined according to library certification levels, patron needs and employees’ availability.
