Job Summary: 
The Youth Librarian plans and implements library services to patrons 18 and under in conformity with policies and practices established by the Cresco Public Library Director and Board of Trustees. This position works with school librarian and community groups to identify, develop, and expand Children’s Services to serve the City of Cresco and surrounding areas. One evening shift per week and one Saturday (8:45-12pm) per month. 

Example Job Duties:
• Demonstrates commitment to the Library’s mission and vision by actively promoting services and resources. 
• Helps establish and maintain a high standard of children’s services. 
• Creates a welcoming environment by providing excellent customer service and maintaining the appearance of public areas, specifically the Children’s Department.
• Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials.
• Assists and instructs children and adults in the use of library services, resources, technology, and self-service options including computers and printers.
• Evaluates patron needs and develops the tools and services to meet those needs.
• Plans, promotes, and implements engaging and diverse programs for youth. 
• Conducts storytelling programs for children under 5 and their caregivers. 
• Prepares marketing materials and sends them to correct agencies. 
• Conducts regular circulation duties.
• Responsible for selection and withdrawal of materials in a variety of formats and topics for the education and enjoyment of the youth of the City of Cresco and Howard County.
• Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports for Library Director.
• Serves as a liaison to community agencies and represents the Library to the community. 
• Pursues and applies for grant money for children’s services. 
• Maintains working knowledge of contemporary issues, trends, and technology in the library profession by attending workshops, professional meetings, and reading current literature. 
• Performs duties in other library areas and participates in special library projects as needed or as requested by Director or Assistant Director. 
• Conducts library tours for children, parents, and interested adults. 

Qualifications:
• High school diploma required. 
• Two years of customer service experience.
• Ability to pass background check. 
• Youth Services Endorsement with the State Library of Iowa within 2 years of hire date.

Knowledge and Skills:
Required:
• Ability to independently initiate, organize, and follow through on programs, projects, and services. 
• Ability to work in an environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noise. 
• Ability to work under stress from deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. 
• Ability to view a computer monitor and/or operate a keyboard for extended periods of time. 
• Ability to move and/or lift materials up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, and sit. 
• Ability to communicate effectively with individuals in-person, over the phone, and via electronic communications. 
• Ability to work effectively with library staff and patrons. 
Desired:
• College degree and/or experience.
• Three years of public service experience or 5 years of customer service experience. 
• Reliable vehicle to conduct library outreach.
