Deputy Director/Chief Public Services Officer – Sacramento Public Library (CA)

Sacramento Public Library (CA) is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, and innovative leader to become its next Deputy Director/Chief Public Services Officer. With a strong commitment to the community, this role operates under the supervision of the Library Director & CEO, providing exemplary leadership and comprehensive oversight of all aspects of the Public Services Department, which includes Branch Operations, Outreach and Community Engagement, as well as Youth and Teen Services departments. Internally, the Deputy Director/Chief Public Services Officer will foster an organizational culture that embodies and values equity, diversity, and inclusion and reflects the community it serves. As an integral member of the Executive Leadership Team and the Library Management Team, the Deputy Director/Chief Public Services Officer demonstrates professionalism and integrity in all actions, often acting with a high level of independence and autonomy.

As the fourth largest library system in California, Sacramento Public Library boasts 28 locations and two bookmobiles serving 1.4 million residents of Sacramento County. Dedicated to strong strategic partnerships, maintaining ongoing upgrades to library facilities, consistent community outreach through bookmobile efforts and community event participation, Sacramento Public Library aims to build strong foundations for the public that increase access, foster growth, and encourage civic engagement. An award-winning library, Sacramento Public Library was recognized for its community focus as the inaugural recipient of the Jerry Kline Community Impact Prize. As a Joint Powers Agency, SPL is independent from the cities or county and is governed by a 15-member board of elected officials. In 2024, Sacramento residents overwhelmingly passed Measure E with 74% voting to make permanent an existing library tax. With an annual budget of $60 million, the library served 2 million visitors last year. In addition, cardholders grew by 19%, surging to 858,125. Circulation hit an all-time high of 8.7 million with digital checkouts exceeding physical materials for the first time.

Responsibilities: The Deputy Director/Chief Public Services Officer acts as a liaison to the Library Authority Board under the supervision of the Library Director & CEO, reporting on library service updates and program analysis, attending board and budget meetings as required. The Deputy Director/Chief Public Services Officer provides leadership by working collaboratively with the management and executive teams to provide direction for library programs and services; assisting the Library Director & CEO in establishing and communicating the values and vision of the library; fostering an organizational culture that values equity, diversity, and inclusion and reflects the community; possessing a strong vision for the future of library services; building effective professional relationships with external stakeholders and especially the community. The Deputy Director manages a five-person team and indirectly oversees 200+ branch and program staff. This role is responsible for 28 branches, systemwide programming, outreach, literacy, and community engagement. The Deputy Director will assist with implementing our recently adopted strategic plan, overseeing an hours assessment, and reimagining SPL’s public service model to better meet our community’s needs.

Qualifications: The qualified candidate for this role will possess a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (or similarly titled equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program, five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in a management level position overseeing public services at a multi-branch library system, including three (3) years of experience as a branch supervisor/manager, and a valid Class C California Drivers’ License and proof of satisfactory Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) clearance will be required within six months of hire.

Compensation: The salary range is $140,358 – $207,376 (negotiable with placement dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package.
